Crafting is an important element of the Dragon Age: Inquisition experience. Throughout Thedas, you will find many materials that can be used for crafting of weapons, armor and potions. You will also need recipes and schematics that may be obtained from merchants, learned from glyphs illuminated by veilfire, or via scrolls found in treasure caches. You will also need to visit a crafting station, which can be found at Haven, the Undercroft at Skyhold, and at any captured keeps.

Schematics determine the appearance and potential power of a crafted item. Materials determine the specific stats and powers that will be added to the new item.

Weapon & Armor Material Slots

Materials are slotted into predetermined spaces, but they hold their own stats that will determine the outcome.

  • Determines the base elemental damage of staves, or the armor or attack value of crafted armor & weapons. Materials will determine the rating:
  • Low armor/damage rating
  • Medium armor/damage rating
  • High armor/damage rating
  • Very high armor/damage rating.

  • Determines any core attribute upgrades to Strength, Dexterity, Magic, Cunning, Willpower, or Constitution. The higher the tier of a material, the higher each piece of it that is added will boost the target attribute. IE: Cotton gives +1 WIllpower. Using 10 cotton will give +10 Willpower.

  • Using materials on this slot will give a special offensive boost. Using complementary buffs on your weapons will yield best results, so bear in mind that this slot can grant you enemy armor and barrier reduction bonuses or bleeds and heal on kill.

  • Elemental and damage-"type" resistances are boosted by using this slot. Using complementary buffs on sets of armor can grant you specific resistances against elements to prepare you for some boss encounters, or can trigger reflect effects on enemies trying to hit you.

Upgrade Crafting & Schematics

Some Weapons and Armor feature upgrade slots that can only be fitted with specially crafted items. You will need the right Schematic to construct the element. Armor has a maximum of two upgrade slots. Weapons have a maximum of three. Materials will also affect upgrade quality so bear in mind the tables provided on the wiki in the Upgrades and Materials pages. Note that upgrading an item adds the upgrade's stats to the item's stats, in addition to changing its appearance. You can freely remove and add existing upgrades or exchange them between different items. New upgrades can be crafted in crafting stations.

  • Rune Crafting: Runes are also crafted items but they have a major difference: The quality of the materials does not affect the quality produced by a specific rune schematic.

Masterwork Crafting

masterwork.png Some high-level and tier weapon and armor schematics have a "masterwork slot" that can be filled by an optional masterwork crafting material. These materials provide special effects that no other crafting material can provide in any other slot and are very powerful in comparison, with possibilities such as greatly increasing critical crafting (+10% to final item stats).materialslotexample.jpg
