Vanguard in Dragon Age: Inquisition is Ability Tree of the Warrior class.

These stalwart warriors protect their allies by making themselves the biggest target on the battlefield. When enemies take the bait, Vanguards pick them apart with brutal precision.


The Vanguard  Warrior is a natural target for foes on the battlefield, drawing their ire to protect allies and give them the freedom they need to perform. Vanguards have many abilities which grant them increased Guard, allowing them to take great punishment even while they deal out even greater damage.

War Cry

You taunt all nearby enemies with a shouted challenge, gaining extra guard for each enemy affected.

  • Duration: 4 Seconds
  • Guard per Enemy: 20%
  • Cooldown: 24 Seconds
  • Cost: 35 Stamina


Call To Arms

You draw strength from your War Cry, improving your armor for the coming fight.

  • Armor Bonus: 200%
  • Duration: 10 seconds

Battle Roar

War Cry echoes across the battlefield, catching more enemies and taunting them for longer.

  • Area of Effect: 10 metres
  • Bonus Duration: 4 seconds
  • Requires: Trespasser DLC



Your powerful shout carries across the battlefield, taunting a targeted enemy and improving your guard.

  • Duration: 8 Seconds
  • Guard Amount: 10%
  • Cooldown: 16 Seconds
  • Cost: 20 Stamina


Throw the Gauntlet

Successfully hitting a target with Challenge gets your blood pumping, temporarily increasing your stamina regeneration.

  • Bonus Regeneration: 15 Stamina per second

Call Them Out

You can challenge as many enemies as you want, with no cooldown.

  • Requires: Trespasser DLC



Charging Bull

You slam into enemies, increasing your guard and knocking them down as you break through their lines.

  • Damage: 50% Weapon Damage
  • Guard per Enemy: 10%
  • Cooldown: 8 Seconds
  • Cost: 5 Stamina per second


Gore and Trample

After you finish your charge, your next ability costs no stamina

  • Duration: 5 seconds

Light on Your Feet

Charging Bull is faster and gives you more control.

  • Requires: Trespasser DLC



The more foes nearby, the harder you fight and the tougher you get.

  • Guard per Enemy: 10%
  • Cooldown Time: 32 Seconds


Still Standing

Unbowed further improves your guard for each nearby enemy, giving you the strength to stay on your feet.

  • Guard Generation Bonus: 50%

Endless Strength

Striking a killing blow with Livid active resets its duration.

  • Guard Generation Bonus: 50%




You accept blows meant for allies, taking a portion of the damage

  • Damage Transfer: 50%
  • Duration: 15 seconds
  • Cooldown: 24 seconds
  • Cost: 35 Stamina


Not Today

You draw strength from your War Cry, improving your armor for the coming fight.

  • Damage Resistance: 50%

Over Here

You taunt any enemies that attack an ally in Bodyguard's area of effect.

  • Duration: 4 seconds
  • Requires: Trespasser DLC



Passive Abilities


Untouchable Defense

They can't kill what they can't get. You get a bonus to your maximum guard.

  • Maximum Guard Bonus: 25%
  • Constitution on Unlock: +3


Trust the Steel

You know how to make the most of your equipment, gaining a bonus to armor when you have active guard. 

  • Armor Bonus: 20%
  • Constitution on Unlock: +3


It'll Cost You

Any foe that attacks you in melee is going to bleed for it, taking a portion of the damage they inflict.

  • Damage Returned: 15%
  • Strength on Unlock: +3


Cutting Words

Your party does more damage to taunted targets as you rattle your enemies' nerves and goad them into mistakes that leave them open.

  • Damage Bonus: 20%
  • Strength on Unlock: +3
