Approval in Dragon Age: Inquisition is your companion and allied NPCs disposition towards you. If they like your actions, they will react warmly and open up about their stories an needs. If they disapprove, they will close off from you and even leave your party and cause. Characters who approve are the Companions and the rating will determine the possibility to Romance those who have romantic subplots.
Approval Rating can be viewed by examining the card that relates to the NPC on your "Gather Party" menu. You may also find their inclination via their greetings when talking to them. Advisors (Cullen, Josephine, Leliana) do NOT have approval ratings so your interactions with them are informative and in two cases maybe flirtatious. Romance may be initiated via flirting. They have personal quests too.
Approval Ratings
Various actions and choices you make in Dragon Age: Inquisition will affect how different NPCs feel about you: how much they approve of you and your choices.
Depending on how much they approve (or disapprove) of your actions, their approval rating towards you will increase or decrease as follows:
- "NPC Slightly Approves" = +1 Approval Point
- "NPC Approves" = +5 Approval Points
- "NPC Strongly Approves"= +25 Approval Points
- "NPC Slightly Disapproves" = -1 Approval Point
- "NPC Disapproves" = -5 Approval Points
- "NPC Strongly Disapproves"= -25 Approval Points

How are you supposed to tell on the cards their disposition? I know I've got one companion maxed because I can't gain more approval. But I see no significant change in their card in comparison to others
